These curses didn't discriminate among good people and bad people all are cursed equally. Even it didn't spare the Kings. One such incident took place almost 600 years ago in the present-day Guwahati with the King of the Koch Dynasty.

The Curse of Goddess Kamakhya to the Royal Koch Dynasty

This legend is well known with the people living in Guwahati and the people who are related to the Koch family. The legend of the Koch family's curse is a well-known topic of Guwahati City. The curse was so real that it still looks like it came into existence a day ago.

Before the Koch Dynasty ruled over the present city of Guwahati, the Mughals attacked the city several times and destroyed the temples. One of the temples that were destroyed by the Mughal General Kalapahad was the Kamakhya Temple located at the top of the Nilachal Hills. The Kamakhya Temple is one of the major Shakti peeth in India and one of the 4 major Adi Shakti Peeth.

After the Koch Dynasty was established in Guwahati City, the Koch King Naranarayana ruled over this vast region. His brother Chilarai was the general of his army. When the King came to knew about the temple, he and his brother visited the temple and found a portion of the temple in ruins. They designed the temple in their own traditional architecture and rebuilt it so that people could continue worshipping the Goddess.

It is said that once Koch King Naranarayana was granting lands to the priests of his Kingdom. There he met a priest called Kendukalai. The King was happy with his knowledge of Hinduism. The King granted him a piece of land and made him the head priest of the temple. Kendukalai started working as a caretaker and also a head priest of the temple.

After some days, the King came to know that when Kendukalai performs puja inside the temple, he goes into a deep trance. When he goes into a deep trance, the Goddess herself dances inside the temple. When the King heard about this story, he wanted to confirm if this was true. He called Kendukalai and asked him if the Goddess dances inside the temple when he performs his regular puja. In reply, Kendukalai said that it is true that when he performs puja, the Goddess dances inside the temple.

King Naranarayana and his brother Chilarai wished to see the auspicious sight of the Goddess dancing. Kendukalai disagreed with their request and said he cannot allow the King and his brother Chilarai. The King bribed Kendukalai and offered him Golds and Jewels and the priest agreed.

King Naranarayana and his brother Chilarai went to the temple at night when the priest was about to perform his daily puja. But Naranarayana and his brother Chilarai's plan failed when the Goddess came to know that they are secretly trying to watch her dance. This angered the Goddess and she turned the priest into a stone and cursed the King and his brother. The goddess cursed the King and his brother with dire consequences that if he, his brother, or any of their family members ever set foot on the temple premise. The Goddess added to the curse by saying that their whole family will perish even if they have a sight of the Nilachal Hills.

From that day till now, none of the family members of the Koch Royal Family has ever visited Kamakhya Temple or even got a sight of the Nilachal Hills. Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur who was then a member of Lok Sabha had to visit Guwahati. When she was told that she can view the Kamakhya Temple from the Guwahati Airport, she immediately remembered the curse and canceled her flight. Later she booked a flight from Calcutta Airport to Silchar Airport and then took a car ride to Guwahati. Maharani Gayatri Devi was the daughter of Kind Nripendra Narayan. King Nripendra Narayan was the direct descendant of King Nara Narayan.

The Koch dynasty was divided into two parts, the Koch Behar which is now a part of West Bengal and was ruled by King Nara Narayan and the second part was Koch Hajo now a part of Assam which was ruled by his brother Chilarai.
